This partnership program between Vancouver Community College and School District 42 provides a unique opportunity for
secondary school students to complete Grade 12 graduation requirements while earning post-secondary credits and certification in the culinary arts industry. Additionally, students will acquire job-ready skills to enter the job market.
The Program
Well-trained hairstylists are in constant demand in every community. Graduates specializing in Women’s Hairstyling who have obtained their provincial license are qualified to secure employment in large or small salons, or they may wish to open their own business. Completion of the Men’s Hair styling program gives graduates the skills needed to complete a six-month in-shop
training period. The training and practical experience obtained in the Hair styling Program gives students the competitive edge
needed to succeed in this industry AND the start of their Red Seal Trade. Hair-styling is now certified by the ITA as a Red Seal Trade - accepted across Canada - NEW FOR 2016. This program is located at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary.

Grading
The minimum grade for individual courses is 64 percent. An overall GPA of 70 percent or better is required. All courses must be passed in order to successfully complete the program. Students who successfully complete the program will have completed 8 courses for 32 credits on the secondary school graduation transcript. They will also receive the VCC certificate and
apprenticeship certification

The standard program consists of the following course content:
• Full 10 month VCC program
• Introduction to Hairstyling Women’s/Men’s
• Hygiene, Bacteriology and Sanitation
• Client Relations
• Communications and Salon Functions
• Hair Cutting • Hair Styling
• Shampoos, Conditioners and Rinses
• Scalp and Hair Treatments
• Hair Structure and Chemistry
• Permanent Waving
• Hair Colouring
• Practicum
Requirements:
Students must have completed Grade 11 by the end of the academic year. Grade 11 students must be enrolled in a course of
study that will lead to Grade 12 graduation upon completion of high school.
A MATH 11
• ENG 11
• Grade 12 ENG (summer school recommended)
In addition, students must be in good physical condition, demonstrate a high degree of commitment.
Recommended characteristics
Students entering the Hair dressing partnership program will have the greatest chance of success if they have the following characteristics:
• Interpersonal and communication skills required for providing customer service
• Pleasant and outgoing personality
• Good hand-eye coordination
• Manual dexterity and creative ability
• Normal colour vision
• Good depth perception and ability to perceive line and form
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to plan and work independently
• Writing and numerical skills are needed
Selection priority will be:
• School District No. 42 High School students who meet qualifications
• Out-of-district High School students.
