The Program is a joint Partnership with BCIT. Students will be BCIT students and School District 42 Students. The course is located at Garibaldi Secondary in Maple Ridge. Program times are 830-300 pm for the duration of the school year.
The program emphasizes a hands-on approach to training, where experience gained in the workshop is focused on industry practice. The necessary theoretical component is integrated into the program to complement and enhance the practical work. Industry tours will expose the student to a variety of work environments.
This is a 24-week program running from September to February at Garibaldi Secondary School. The program provides graduates with the theory and practical skills necessary to enter the electrical trade. The electrical worker plans, assembles, installs, tests, repairs and maintains electrical equipment and systems in commercial, industrial and marine facilities. The program emphasizes a hands-on approach to training. Experience gained in the workshop is focused on industry practice. The minimum grade for individual courses is 70 percent. An overall GPA of 70 percent or better is required. All courses must be passed in order to successfully complete the program. (ITA requirement) Dual Credit. Students who successfully complete this program will have six complete courses (24 credits) on their secondary school graduation transcript.
Program Content The standard program consists of the following course content: Course Applied mechanics - 4 credits Fundamentals of electricity - 8 credits Principles of magnetism - 4 credits Wiring methods - 12 credits Electrical codes, plans and specs - 8 credits AC circuit analysis - 2 credits Electronic devices - 2 credits Basic motor control - 4 credits Computer skills and job preparation - 4 credits
Students must have completed Grade 11 by the end of the academic year. Grade 11 students must be enrolled in a course of study that will lead to Grade 12 graduation upon completion of high school.

• Grade 12 ENG OR COM can be taken concurrently
• Physics 11
(*May take the BCIT Pre-Entry Math and Reading Assessment in lieu of Math or English) In addition, students must be in good physical condition, demonstrate a high degree of commitment, and provide their own personal safety equipment: steel toe boots, hardhat, safety glasses, etc Recommended characteristics Students entering the Electrician partnership program will have the greatest chance of success if they have the following characteristics: • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English • Physical and mental abilities required to perform the daily tasks associated with working in construction • Regular lifting and transportation of heavy objects • Willing to work outdoors in all weather • Ability to multi-task • Motor skills and physical capability necessary for efficient and safe use of trade related tools and equipment
Selection priority will be:
• School District No. 42 High School students who meet qualifications
• Out-of-district High School students.
