This partnership between Kwantlen polytechnic University (KPU) and School District No. 42 provides a unique opportunity for
secondary school students to complete Grade 12 graduation requirements while earning post-secondary credits and certification in Carpentry tuition free! Additionally, students will acquire skills to enter the job market or pursue other post-secondary
education.
The Program
The purpose of the Carpentry program is to provide students with skills and knowledge in the subject area of building construction. The scope and depth of this program is appropriate for students entering this industry on a permanent basis. Hands-on shop experience is the basis on which skills are developed in the program. This program is developed around the individual needs of students. This program is offered Monday through Friday for the full school year (10 months). Students will have to travel to the Cloverdale Kwantlen campus for 4 weeks to complete the program

Students will be required to supply their own CSA approved steel-toed safety shoes or boot, CSA approved hard hat, safety
glasses, 1" by 25' measuring tape with both imperial and metric measuring units
Grading
The minimum grade for individual courses is 64 percent. An overall GPA of 70 percent or better is required. All courses must be passed in order to successfully complete the program. Students who successfully complete this program will have 7 complete courses for 28 credits on the secondary school graduation transcript. They will also receive the KPU certificate/citation
Program Content The standard program consists of the following course content: • safe work practices • basic power tools • floor framing • stair calculating and building • concrete quantity calculating • blueprint reading and basic estimating • basic hand tools • introduction to concrete • wall framing Requirements:
MATH 11* (Foundations Math is Recommended)
ENG 11*
Grade 12 ENG (summer school recommended)
In addition, students must be in good physical condition, demonstrate a high degree of commitment. Please Note: Students who have taken Workplace Math are encouraged to speak with the Trades Coordinator to be registered with SkillPlan. SkillPlan is a free online software suite for students in the skilled trades used to build essential academic and trades associated skills. It is a “plug and play” software that allows students to skip ahead of concepts they are already familiar with, and/or spend more time upgrading skills they may need to brush up on. It is not meant to be onerous; the purpose is to assist students with success in their trade. SkillPlan offers modules that can be worked through in as little as a few hours or used throughout your trade journey all the way through to your Red Seal examination. Recommended characteristics • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English • Physical and mental abilities required to perform the daily tasks associated with working in construction • Regular lifting and transportation of heavy objects • Working outdoors in all weather • Ability to multi-task • Motor skills and physical capability needed to efficiently and safely user trade related tools and equipment
Selection priority will be:
• School District No. 42 High School students who meet qualifications
• Out-of-district High School students.
